Has Europe Reached its Limits?

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

Has Europe Reached its Limits?

FRIDAY 9 DECEMBER 2016, 09:45 - 18:30
AUDITORIUM 2 | MAISON DE LA PAIX, GENEVA

Has Europe, both the EU and the European idea, reached its limits? The current crisis of the EU encapsulated in Brexit, economic stagnation that extends beyond the Eurozone, the rise of populism and the challenge represented by migration puts into question Europe’s self-image as a civilisational model. This colloquium draws on expertise from various fields to debate whether Europe may or may not have exhausted its potential

Organised under the scientific responsibility of Professor Andre Liebich as part of the Institute’s cooperation programme with the Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen, funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research, and Innovation.

The full programme is available here.

Francis Lieber Prize - Call for Submissions and Nominations

The Lieber Society is once again soliciting contributions for the Francis Lieber Prize and we would be grateful for your support in disseminating this call for nominations as widely as possible.
The American Society of International Law's Lieber Society on the Law of Armed Conflict awards the Francis Lieber Prize to the authors of publications that the judges consider to be outstanding in the field of law and armed conflict. Both monographs and articles (including chapters in books of essays) are eligible for consideration — the prize is awarded to the best submission in each of these two categories.
Criteria:
Any work in the English language published during 2016 or whose publication is in proof at the time of submission may be nominated for this prize. Works that have already been considered for this prize may not be re-submitted. Entries may address topics such as the use of force in international law, the conduct of hostilities during international and non‑international armed conflicts, protected persons and objects under the law of armed conflict, the law of weapons, operational law, rules of engagement, occupation law, peace operations, counter‑terrorist operations, and humanitarian assistance. Other topics bearing on the application of international law during armed conflict or other military operations are also appropriate.
Eligibility:
Anyone may apply for the article or book prize. For those in academia or research institutions, the prize is open to those who are up to 8 years post-PhD or JD or those with up to 8 years in academic teaching or research position. Membership in the American Society of International Law is not required. Multi-authored works may be submitted if all the authors are eligible to enter the competition. Submissions from outside the United States are welcomed.
Submission:
Submissions, including a letter or message of nomination, must be received by 9 January 2017. Three copies of books must be submitted. Electronic submission of articles is encouraged. Authors may submit their own work. All submissions must include contact information (e‑mail, fax, phone, address) and relevant information demonstrating compliance with eligibility criteria. IHL Talks: Violence Against Healthcare and Humanitarian Workers

IHL Talks
Violence Against Healthcare and
Humanitarian Workers

   Thursday 24 November I 12:15 - 13:30
Humanitarium (17 avenue de la Paix) I Geneva

Violence against healthcare facilities and humanitarian workers remains a recurring and preoccupying issue in today’s world. Paradoxically, this takes place within a well-accepted framework of protection of health care facilities and medical or humanitarian personnel under international humanitarian law (IHL), which rules and principles are not contested either by states or non-state armed groups. This IHL Talk, organized with the support of the ICRC, aims at reflecting on the reasons why health care and humanitarian workers are being targeted despite their protection under IHL and what policy tools can be elaborated to implement and ensure better respect of the law by the different parties in armed conflicts.

Moderator
Imogen Foulkes, BBC Geneva Correspondent

Panelists
Babak Ali Naraghi, Head of Health Care in Danger Project, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
Robert Kolb, Professor of Public International Law, University of Geneva and Geneva Academy
Caroline Abu-Sada, Director of the Research Unit on Humanitarian Stakes and Practices (UREPH), MSF Switzerland

About IHL Talks
The IHL Talks are a new series of events, hosted by the Geneva Academy, on international humanitarian law and current humanitarian topics. Every two months at lunchtime, academic experts, practitioners, policy makers and journalists discuss burning humanitarian issues and their regulation under international law.

INVITATION Dear Sir, Madam, We are pleased to inform you that the Telders International Law Moot Court Competition 2017 will take place from 18 to 20 May at the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies and the Peace Palace in The Hague. An unique event in the arena of international legal studies, the Telders Competition has for the past decades been a platform for the highest achieving students at law schools throughout Europe who compete against their peers in a true-to-life courtroom setting. The Final Round on Saturday 20 May will see the remaining two teams plead a case before a panel of three Judges from the International Court of Justice in the Great Hall of Justice at the Peace Palace. In 2017, we will celebrate the 40thedition of the competition, which will make this edition extra special.
